Principal's Message

Dear Bobcat families,

Welcome back to the 2017-2018 school year!  I am happy your child will be attending our school and am confident you have made the right choice for your child’s education!  This year promises to be a great one as we meet new students, new families and new staff members.  Our students are our first priority and we always put their needs first.  This is the foundation of a strong education system, and at Monte Vista, this concept is deeply embedded in our school culture and philosophy.  We also believe that parental involvement in school life is fundamentally important.  Children need to know that there is a strong connection between school and home and that their parents are aware of what is going on and are available to offer support.  Teachers and parents must work together in order to help students become independent learners and ultimately, global citizens, responsible team players and inspirational leaders.

As a proud member of the No Excuses University network of schools, we continue to promote our culture of college and career readiness. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to be educated in a way that prepares them for college and career. We also educate our students on the importance of following strong character traits.  While we know our students will need strong academic skills as they prepare for college and career, they must possess strong interpersonal skills in order to reach their full potential.

We are excited to be officially recognized as an official The Leader in Me school. The Leader in Me is FranklinCovey’s whole school transformation process. It teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader.  The Leader in Me is aligned with best-in-class content and concepts practiced by global education thought leaders. It provides a logical, sequential and balanced process to help schools proactively design the culture that reflects their vision of the ideal school.  Content from The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is a key component of the overall The Leader in Me process. The 7 Habits is a synthesis of universal, timeless principles of personal and interpersonal effectiveness, such as responsibility, vision, integrity, teamwork, collaboration and renewal, which are secular in nature and common to all people and cultures.

We are an AVID Elementary school in grades 2nd - 5th. AVID Elementary is a foundational component of the AVID College Readiness System and supports AVID’s mission to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.  The program is designed to be embedded into the daily instruction of all elementary classrooms.  AVID Elementary's implementation resources, training, and philosophy are all grounded in the idea that the growth mindset can be taught to students, and it is through the growth mindset that AVID students succeed in following their dreams and fulfilling their aspirations.  AVID Elementary takes a systemic approach through the use of WICOR and an explicit focus on high expectations, rigor, and developing a college readiness culture.

I would like to encourage you to attend school events, starting with the Family Information Night and Tailgate Party on Monday, August 14th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. At this time, you will receive your child’s class assignment, pick up Back to School paperwork, enroll in before and after school programs, learn about parent organizations such as PTA, SSC and ELAC and more.  We will also be building our school community with food trucks on campus from which you can purchase dinner.  You may attend anytime between 5:00 and 7:00.  If you cannot attend this event, class assignments will be posted on Parent Portal on August 15th. Classes will NOT be publically posted due to confidentiality and school board policy.

School safety is a top priority at Monte Vista.  By providing a safe learning environment, each student has an opportunity to learn and grow academically, emotionally and socially.  School safety is ensured through staff professional development and monthly safety drills.

Nutrition is an important component in the educational process.  Our Child Nutrition Services (CNS) department provides daily breakfast and lunch nutritional choices if you choose to that option.

Mark your calendar for Back to School Night on Thursday, August 24th.  At this time you will get to know your child’s teacher and learn about their instructional program.  Please plan to attend.

It is such a pleasure to be part of the Monte Vista Elementary School “family.”  Monte Vista provides students with a rigorous and well-rounded educational experience and focuses on preparing students to become leaders for college, career and life.  I am looking forward to a wonderful school year!

Sincerely,
